Restaurante Terramundi: A Galician Menu of the Day for Big Eaters

Madrid Food blog

I’d been hearing people talk about a wonderful menu of the day at Restaurante Terramundi, located just a few blocks from my house in the center of the Literary Quarter. When Ale’s aunt came into town for a quick lunch, it was the perfect time to try it for a menú del día.

The restaurant has a comfortable country house vibe and, although it was a Wednesday afternoon, the large dining room was completely packed at 3:00 pm. The menu offers a lot of choice, and at only 11.00€ per person, including drinks and dessert, it is a great deal.

What we tried

Restaurante Terramundi Madrid
Crema de espinacas con gambas

The cream of spinach soup with shrimp was nice enough, it arrived hot and had two large fresh shrimp inside.

Carpaccio de ternera ecológica

The carpaccio of organic Galician beef was okay, but it was a bit dry for my taste. I prefer my meat nearly raw, so this roast beef style was begging for a nice piece of rye bread and some mustard and pickles!

Restaurante Terramundi Madrid
Surtido de carnes con salsa tetilla

The mixed grilled meats with tetilla sauce was a bit of a mess, and the meat was quite tough (apart from the chicken which was very tender). The tetilla cheese sauce was nice, but the fries were not very good, and I’d recommend other things on the menu.

Codillo a la Gallega con chorizo y patatas

The giant pork knuckle with olive oil and paprika (Galician style) was, well, a giant pork knuckle, but the meat was falling off the bone and the potatoes were perfectly cooked. It lacked salt for me, but they brought some over at my request. It was good and hearty, but not something I’d crave.

The Highs: Lots of food and a great deal in the Literary Quarter.

The Lows: The fries and grilled meats were not worth eating again.

The Verdict: Go hungry when you are craving a home cooked meal. There’s no finesse here, but that’s okay!
