Malaga’s urban street art, MAUS (Malaga Arte Urbano SoHo) is mainly found in—you guessed it—SoHo, which is the area known as the Barrio de las Artes or the Art Neighborhood. It's part if a new initiative that grew out of a desire to reform the neighborhood just behind the CAC (the Center for Contemporary Art). The neighborhood was once an important bourgeois area with beautiful architecture, but over the last 50 years or so, it became a run down, less-frequented area of the city. Today, this rejuvenated area is home to fascinating cultural events and some of the best street art in Malaga.
The MAUS project offers more than just street art in Malaga.
There are a range of cultural events including photography, painting, sculpture, dance, theater and music. Along with the CAC, this initiative has served to transform the neighborhood and showcase Malaga’s vibrant art scene.
Malaga’s urban street art is well worth a look, and if you’re not sure where to start, start your time at the CAC and then wind your way through the streets of SoHo exploring the different murals. Some of them even have their own little plaques with a QR code so you can learn more about the work.
